Unsubscribe option
Providing your message recipients with a readily available unsubscribe option is a fundamental best practice. It is also a legal requirement in certain countries. From your viewpoint, if your recipients choose to unsubscribe instead of using a This is spam button in their email client, your complaint rating is not increased, and your reputation does not suffer as a result.
SmartRelay unsubscribe features
In addition to your own unsubscribe activities, you can also take advantage of the features provided by SmartRelay.
SmartRelay does the following:
- It automatically adds a List-unsubscribe header to every message
- The header is coded in such a way that mail clients supporting it, such as Gmail, trigger a special message to a Contactsend subsystem
- The recipient is identified and automatically added to your suppression list
You don’t need to do anything to activate this feature. It is carried out automatically when SmartRelay re-wraps each message.
SmartRelay and Contactsend
You can also take advantage of SmartRelay working together with the subscribe/unsubscribe functionality that is available through Contactsend.
- After the Contactsend Web UI is configured for your account, you add a specially coded link to your email, before sending it to SmartRelayFor example,

- Recognizes the link
- Retrieves the configuration information from your Contactsend account
- Rewrites the URL as needed
- Users clicking on the link are redirected to a Contactsend service that manages the unsubscribe activity for you
Note:
You are responsible for inserting the appropriate subscription system ID. The simplest way to do this, is by using the Contactsend Web UI. In the example above, the subscription system ID is the 120024014701 entry.
